Calico
36600 Ghost Town Road, Yermo, CA, United States, 92398
Founded in 1881, Calico was a thriving mining town in the middle of the Mojave desert, known for its rich reserves of silver. A steady decline in the demand and value of silver beginning in the mid-1890s dealt a blow to the once prosperous town's fortunes eventually leading to it being abandoned. The deserted ghost town was brought back to life by amusem*nt park enthusiast Walter Knott, who managed to restore much of the original structures to recreate an authentic mining town from the Old West. Visitors will find themselves transported back in time to discover life as it was at the peak of its mining history, through tours, re-enactments and exhibits. Fun experiences at the site include gold panning and rides on the Calico Odessa Railroad, narrow gauge mining rail from the time.
